Reading a Packaging Supplier Audit: Certifications That Matter

Most flexible packaging suppliers list the same certifications. The useful question is not whether a supplier holds them but what each one actually covers and which production records sit behind it.

What the main certifications cover

ISO 9001:2015 certifies a quality management system: documented processes, traceability and corrective action. It says nothing directly about food safety.

BRC Packaging Materials addresses hygiene, contamination control and product safety specifically for packaging production, which is why food brands treat it as the more relevant standard for a converter.

Food-contact compliance is separate again. EU framework regulation and US FDA requirements govern which materials may contact food and under what conditions, evidenced by declarations of compliance and migration testing rather than a site certificate.

Records worth requesting

  • Declarations of compliance for the specific structure you are buying, not a generic statement.
  • Migration test reports covering your temperature and contact conditions.
  • Batch traceability from resin lot to finished bag, which is what makes a recall manageable.
  • In-line inspection records for print and seal, showing what is checked and how often.

Questions that reveal real practice

Ask how a colour deviation is caught and what happens to the affected material. Ask who has authority to stop a run. Ask to see a recent corrective action record. The answers show whether the system is used daily or only produced for audits.

How we document our work

Lvpai Packaging operates ISO 9001:2015 and BRC certified production with in-line colour inspection and seal testing on every run. We supply declarations of compliance and test data per structure, and full batch traceability so a quality question can be answered with records rather than recollection.
