Child-Resistant Pouches: Closure Types and Compliance Basics

Child-resistant (CR) packaging is required for a growing range of products, from certain botanicals and supplements to household chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In flexible packaging the requirement is met with a specialised zipper or slider that needs a deliberate two-step action to open.

Closure mechanisms

Push-and-slide sliders require the user to press a button or tab while moving the slider. They are intuitive for adults and easy to operate repeatedly, which matters for products used daily.

Press-to-close CR zippers require pressure at a specific point along the track before the profile releases. They cost less than sliders and add no protruding parts, which suits thin bags and mailing.

Both are typically combined with a heat-sealed top that the consumer removes at first opening, plus a tear notch for controlled access.

Compliance basics

CR performance is assessed by protocol testing with child and adult panels rather than by design description alone. Certification is tied to the specific closure and bag construction, so changing film thickness, bag width or closure supplier can invalidate an existing certificate. Keep the tested configuration fixed once approved.

Design considerations

  • Leave adequate space above the closure for the tamper-evident seal and tear notch.
  • Confirm the closure width is compatible with your bag width before artwork is finalised.
  • Check whether senior-friendly opening is required in your market.
  • Plan for slightly slower filling line speeds with slider closures.

What we supply

We produce mylar and high-barrier pouches with both push-and-slide and press-to-close CR closures, tested for repeated open and close cycles, and we can provide documentation support for markets that require compliance evidence.
